About Us

Welcome to Smoke-Free Housing Canada. This is a national website dedicated to providing information on second-hand smoke in multi-unit dwellings (MUDs) and advocating for increased smoke-free housing options across the country. This website is maintained by a group of tobacco control advocates, including members of the Canadian Smoke-Free Housing Coalition, who are committed to addressing this growing public health issue.

Tobacco control advocates across the country are alarmed by the growing number and intensity of complaints from people in MUDs who are being involuntarily exposed to second-hand smoke infiltrating their homes from neighbouring units. This website was created in response to this crisis to provide information and resources on second-hand smoke in MUDs and advocate for increased voluntary smoke-free housing options. While each province and territory has residential tenancy legislation that outlines the rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants, and provides a specific means of settling tenancy disputes, there is general information on second-hand smoke in MUDs that can apply to all provinces and territories. Rather than each province creating their own resources to address this issue, this website will provide generic information that we hope will be useful no matter where in Canada you live.

By clicking on your province/territory on the home page map, you will be directed to an organization(s) in your area that may have information on second-hand smoke in multi-unit dwellings specific to your province/territory. While not all jurisdictions have specific information on this issue, you will be provided with contact information to access assistance in your area.
